When the Stars Align

As I prepare for my next trip and finish unpacking in my new home in the stunning Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, I can take a moment to share my last adventure—a unique opportunity to sail the Mediterranean on the only 5-masted sail ship in the world.
The intimate setting made it easy to meet people and make new friends from around the world. I was able to explore parts of Earth for which I had a keen interest; Croatia, Montenegro, Sicily and Capri. With this exhilarating itinerary, one evening stood out—not just on this trip, but in my lifetime.
Not all weather conditions were conducive to sailing just on wind. Therefore, when the sails were dropped and engines turned off (which, fortunately, did happen often), it was magical. The tranquility of the wind in the sails was married with amazing classical music and a colorful light show, all which thrilled the senses.
One night, after the “set sail” had concluded; most people went below to socialize. It was fortuitous that I decided to stay “up top.” Finally, the oppressive heat wave that tortured Europe was abated, and I could relish the ocean breeze as it bathed us in comfort. And, just when I thought that was magical with my long hair flowing in the wind, the Milky Way was allowed to demonstrate its magnificence due to the mitigation of lighting from civilization. It just couldn’t get any better…but, it did!
As I gazed at the sky, pondering the vastness of our corner of the universe, a meteor streaked across the sky…then another and another. Our very own natural fireworks display was enchanting. I felt sorry for the people aboard who were possibly missing a chance of a lifetime. Bus, as every stunning meteor streaked, I tried to imagine that each one represented loved ones who had left me behind on earth. I felt an immense sense of gratitude for this celestial gift and was moved to tears.
