My Surprise Host Was Leonardo da Vinci

A few years back, I embarked on a much-anticipated revisit to Florence…and I was introducing a friend to the picturesque environs of Tuscany, Italy. With a little planning, we decided to stay in an old monastery that had been converted into a hotel in Florence. From there, we could take the train to numerous locations in the area and explore one of the most beautiful places on earth.
We were a bit excited about the “monastery” concept of our hotel. It had a large plaza in front and even a small one in the back. When we checked in, the hotel management decided to upgrade us…to the top floor. It was only three stories; but, alas, no elevator. So, we schlepped our luggage up the worn stairs to the top. We expected a nice room, but not the entire top floor. When we opened the door, we were astounded. It was a full apartment. We entered a huge living room; one big enough for a small circus. Then we walked through to an over-sized bedroom. We opened the shutters to realize that we had a straight-on view of the Florence Duomo. Wow!!
With further inspection, we discovered that there was another small room (which seemed like the size of a study) in the apartment and a small stairway up to the bathroom. It felt like a “high five” moment.
We enjoyed our days in the area and even discovered that the statue of David was actually located in the gallery that was across from the back plaza of the old monastery. After a few days’ stay, we were off to Venice.
Well, the monastery story doesn’t end there. After returning home and enjoying the History Channel one evening, we were learning more about the history of art and architecture in Florence. To our amazement, they discussed Leonardo da Vinci’s influential role throughout the region and his living quarters on the top floor of a monastery. We were looking at our Florence apartment! We were learning that we had stayed in Leonardo da Vinci’s apartment in Florence. My jaw hit the floor, and I was smiling so big that my face hurt. Just imagine!!
I immediately looked at my friend and asked “Why didn’t they tell us?” His response made all the sense in the world…”If people knew that was his apartment, everyone would be taking a piece of it home.” He was right, but I was still grinning.
I have to admit that this is one of those stories you just keep thinking about. Opening the shutters where he stood, imagining the writings and sketches he created while staying there. Just knowing you had walked bare-footed on the same floor and had been present in that rich energy. But then, if you ever visit Florence, you are always present in the overwhelming energy of so many talented and influential people.
I’m still smiling…
